ETHAN FERDINAND:
BUILDING A UNIQUE MOVEMENT

In the ever-evolving world of fashion, few stories are as compelling as that of Ethan Ferdinand, founder of the brand UNIQUE. More than just a clothing label, UNIQUE was born out of a desire to dismantle stereotypes and create a movement that empowers young black men. "We wanted to break the stereotype of young black males not being able to create something with positive intentions," says Ethan. UNIQUE is a brand that reflects individuality and self-expression, aimed at providing role models for the next generation, especially for black boys. “The foundations of providing a positive impact on future generations are deep-rooted in UNIQUE’s code and conduct.”

A Growing Collection

Currently, UNIQUE offers a stylish range of tracksuits, T-shirts, and hoodies, with plans to expand the collection in the near future. "We intend to introduce more lifestyle-based attire that will cater to all events, from casual wear to more formal dress codes," Ethan explains. This ambition reflects his goal to create versatile fashion that transcends boundaries and speaks to a broad audience.

Being a Black Entrepreneur in Fashion

As a black entrepreneur in the fashion world, Ethan acknowledges the unique challenges he faces. "It can be difficult finding inspirational figures to relate to as a black man in this industry," he shares. He also highlights the pressure of staying true to his vision despite external influences. "There are so many factors that can sway your thought process, but staying headstrong is key."

The Intersection of Streetwear and Luxury

Ethan believes UNIQUE fits comfortably within the luxury streetwear space, blending high-quality fashion with a casual, urban edge. The brand’s ethos and aesthetic align with the evolving culture of black British fashion, which, according to Ethan, is becoming more collaborative and supportive. "I think the black British fashion culture is growing into a space where creatives can network and share their styles, but I believe we need to focus on creating a unique UK fashion identity."

Advice for Aspiring Designers

When asked what advice he would give to aspiring designers, Ethan’s response is straightforward but powerful: "Don’t be disheartened if those closest to you don’t support your vision. Strangers will often show more love than family and friends." His message is clear: setbacks are inevitable, but perseverance and belief in one’s creative dream are essential.

A Call for Change in the Fashion Industry

If Ethan could change one thing about the fashion industry, it would be to create more accessible networking opportunities, especially for individuals from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. "I think having more fashion-related masterclasses or educational forums would help build a stronger fashion collective," he suggests.

Through UNIQUE, Ethan Ferdinand is not only making his mark on the fashion industry but also laying the groundwork for a new generation of creatives, showing that fashion can be both an expression of self and a force for positive change.

Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, Ethan has big plans for his label. He envisions UNIQUE on an international platform, collaborating with diverse communities to create campaigns aligned with the brand’s core values. "I want UNIQUE to grow into a warehouse or office setting where we can hold more stock, create content, and engage with our customers in a welcoming atmosphere." His long-term goal is to see the brand featured in major fashion publications like Vogue and other prestigious outlets. Ethan sees his brand not just as a clothing line but as a force for community-building and knowledge sharing.

Overcoming Challenges

Owning and running a brand is not without its struggles. Ethan admits that one of his biggest challenges has been maintaining self-discipline and motivation. "Being a brand owner doesn’t just mean producing clothing. You’re also responsible for social media marketing, customer service, website design, and so much more." In such a fast-paced and ever-changing industry, it’s difficult to stay ahead of trends. "Keeping up with the research and evolution of fashion can be intense," he says.
